Citrus Commission To Explore Fed Takeover
The Florida Citrus Commission recently voted to appoint a seven-member exploratory committee charged with deciding whether to turn over its citrus juice marketing and research efforts to a new federal agency. The agency, which would need to be created by a USDA marketing order, would be similar to those promoting beef, cotton and other products.
In the meantime, the Citrus Department has asked Gov. Charlie Crist to give it $18 million from general tax revenue to support those programs. The seven-member panel will be named at a Feb. 21 meeting.
