Mutual Working To Secure Research Dollars
As Congress reconvenes, one of the top issues remaining from 2006 is clearing the Fiscal Year 2007 appropriations bills, including funding for federal agriculture programs.
Florida Citrus Mutual (Mutual) has been very active in seeking funding for citrus canker and citrus greening research, in addition to other research initiatives. Mutual’s original request for citrus canker and citrus greening research was for $4 million with the hopes of at least sustaining the House-passed level of $2.5 million.
With a change in Congressional leadership, the process of clearing the appropriation bills has become unconventional, and we are looking at the possibility of no Congressional earmarks being approved.
Mutual will continue working with the Administration and Congress to ensure funding for vital research projects, such as citrus canker and citrus greening, and is currently preparing its request for the Fiscal Year 2008 appropriations process.
