Five Million Added to Orange Crop Estimate
Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released its third forecast for the 2006-07 season. The USDA increased the state’s orange crop by 5 million boxes to 140 million boxes. Early-mids and navels account for 3 million boxes of the increase, with Valencias making up the remaining 2 million for totals of 75 million and 65 million respectively.
Larger fruit sizes and lower than expected rates of fruit drop are behind the increase in the forecast for both varieties.
The forecast for grapefruit remained at 26 million boxes, with 9 million white and 17 million colored. Estimates for specialty fruit varieties were unchanged at 1.1 million boxes of Tangelos, 2.4 million boxes for early varieties and 2.2 million boxes of Honeys.
