Hurricane Preparedness for Trees Workshop Set

On Sept. 16, Green Industries Institute is organizing a half-day hands-on workshop on Hurricane Preparedness for Trees. Florida experienced 57 hurricanes during the 20th century, but most Floridians did not begin tracking hurricanes until 2004. The 2004 hurricane season cost Florida $42.4 billion in property damage. Vegetation damage is one of the biggest dangers of hurricanes. Green Industries Institute is leading the industry by presenting the following topics - methods of assessing hazardous trees, performing preventive hurricane pruning and restoration pruning, bracing for a hurricane with tree supports, and tree selection for landscapes in hurricane regions. Our experts will demonstrate and discuss how professionals can prepare and restore our trees in the landscape for greater resilience to hurricanes.

The strength of the Tree Care Workshop is in our speakers who are leaders in academic and professional experience areas. Joy Dorst, a Landscape Architect graduate of Penn State and University of California, is an award winning landscape designer, professor of landscape design, and as a leader in the landscape industry brings current lessons learned from an active hurricane season to this workshop; Meghan Pressley, a graduate in Horticulture from the University of Florida, is a master of tree pruning and consultant with utility companies brings her pruning skill and trained eye to this workshop; Amanda Bisson, a Doctoral student of Plant Medicine from the University of Florida, brings current research and new industry practices for urban tree diseases, pests and structural defects, and their management to this workshop; and John Moscarillo, a certified horticulture professional with Skinner Nurseries, the fastest growing wholesale nursery in south-eastern states, will bring his many years of experience to demonstrate how to best brace our trees for storms.

The Hurricane Preparedness Tree Care Workshop will be sponsored by Arborbrace and Skinner Nurseries.
